Rehabilitation Services
At Sanctuary at Saint Mary's, each rehabilitation
discipline has therapists on site full-time. Physical
Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology
are available six days per week for patients in skilled
nursing units.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy helps people recover lost mobility
and function so that they can perform the activities
of their daily lives. Following an evaluation during
which the client’s range of motion, strength,
mobility and lifestyle are carefully assessed, the physical
therapist develops and implements a customized plan
of treatment and education.
Our Physical therapists take a holistic approach to
care, involving the client’s caregivers in treatment
goals. Treatment techniques often include therapeutic
exercises, walking, balance training, and techniques
to compensate for lost skills.
Occupational Therapy
Losing the ability to perform a task, whether it’s
getting dressed or performing job activities can greatly
alter a person’s feeling of purpose in life. By
breaking tasks down and rebuilding the pieces, our occupational
therapists can assist clients in attaining the highest
levels of independence possible in their lives.
Occupational therapists seek to minimize muscle atrophy,
deformity and pain, as well as damage to self-esteem
of social relationships as a result of an illness or
trauma. However mild or severe the impairment, our occupational
therapists bring knowledge, optimism and patience to
their work as highly skilled members of the healthcare
team.
Speech-Language Pathology
Communication is much more than simply speaking. The
exchange of information between people also involves
listening, observing, writing, reading, organizing,
facial expressions and gestures. When communication
is impaired, speech-language pathologists can help the
client regain the skills needed to connect with others.
Our speech-language pathologists identify and treat
disorders of swallowing (dysphagia). Diet modification,
strengthening exercises, compensatory techniques and
education are utilized to ensure that the client is
safely meeting his or her nutritional needs.
Rehabilitation staff backgrounds include:
- Extensive experience in treating geriatric
populations
- Extensive experience in working with individuals
who have head injuries
- Acute and home health rehabilitation
- Cardiac rehabilitation
- NDT Certification in Physical Therapy
In addition, therapists work together cooperatively,
combining their knowledge and skills to ensure the best
possible rehabilitation program for the patient. |
